We all dream of the perfect wedding, and more and more, destination weddings are becoming the way to make it truly unforgettable. Spanning several days, these celebrations give couples and their loved ones time to slow down, connect and make magical memories together. But have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes to bring these safari wedding dreams to life?
As a guide at Thornybush, Sarah is lucky enough to see – and be part of – the love stories that unfold out here. And after just having her own magical wedding at Thornybush, she can truly say there’s no better place to say “I do. We asked her to write what really goes on as a guide during a Thornybush wedding, and we can honestly say, we wish we could re-do our “I do’s” again too!
We often help our guests make their wedding dreams come true, and the base for this special experience is the game drives. There’s something incredibly bonding about going on safari with your loved ones. As a guide, it’s always such great fun taking the wedding parties out on drive – you can feel the excitement building.
The moment they realise they’re about to experience incredible wildlife sightings – with all their closest people – it becomes more than just a safari, it becomes part of their wedding story. The evening sundowner stops are always a highlight: laughter, shared toasts, and that sense of wonder as the sun dips below the horizon.
After the drive, the excitement is still electric. Guests return to the lodge buzzing with stories, full of anticipation for what’s to come. The shift from wild adventure to wedding celebration is seamless – and magical.
Behind the scenes, it’s all hands on deck. While guests enjoy a relaxing morning or one last drive, the team prepares for the main event. I often assist with setting up the ceremony site – from chairs to flowers to making sure everything blends beautifully into the natural surroundings.
One of my favourite moments is driving the bridal party to the ceremony site. There’s this incredible hush that falls over everyone. Turning a corner and seeing the wedding set-up appear in the middle of the bush – it’s always met with awe.
Ceremonies here are truly one of a kind. I’ve seen elephants, rhinos, even lions respectfully passing by – wild guests at the ultimate celebration! We’re always on hand to ensure safety, but witnessing those moments adds an unforgettable layer to the experience.
After the “I do’s,” I often take the newlyweds out for a private photo session. It’s one of the most beautiful moments – quiet, emotional, just the two of them in the wilderness. Once, a pair of wild dogs even made an appearance during a shoot, which made for surreal and once-in-a-lifetime wedding photos!
The celebration doesn’t stop at the ceremony. The boma comes alive with food, dancing, and music. There’s something incredibly special about toasting under the stars, surrounded by your favourite people – and nature.
Many guests even join for one final game drive the next morning (yes, even after the party!) – a gentle farewell to the wild, and to the memories just made.
We guides are left with a sense of pride, knowing we’ve played a small role in something truly extraordinary.
If you’re dreaming of a wedding that’s unique, heartfelt, and wildly unforgettable – Thornybush is ready to welcome you.
