Since COVID-19 took the world by storm, governments, the private sectors and non-profits, have been fighting to claw back a little stability. The fight here in rural South Africa, is just as real. With food security quickly becoming a gloomy reality.Times are very different in the midst of this COVID-19 dust cloud. Families are battling. Those who were employed, have had to face a new stark reality of furlough or worse, retrenchment. Those who were already unemployed and struggling, are now in an extremely vulnerable situation.

Together, Thornybush community Project and Nourish Eco Village, have initiated a Family Food Project, in the hope of alleviating some financial stress for our beloved community members and their families.

Assisting Those Most In Need At This Time

Our hope is to raise enough funds to assist 350 families who have been identified as needing urgent assistance. Originally the project was scoped to provide assistance for three months, May, June and July 2020 – however, as things have progressed, it looks more likely that industries will only reignite towards the end of the year, and so we have decided to extend the project to the end of December 2020.

We started the Thornybush Family Food Fundraiser with the intention of sending actual parcels of food to each family, however we discovered that there were some challenges involved with this approach, and so we decided to move the food parcel into the virtual world with a food voucher. Each beneficiary receives an SMS every month which they can redeem from nearby grocery stores.

Each voucher amount is based on what a monthly basic basket of essential food and toiletry items would be. 1 Voucher = R500/ 27USD / 23GBP or 25EURO.

Donate and Win!

In order to be able to feed the 350 families on our list until the end of the year, we will need to raise a total of R1.4 Million. For every R500 or more donated, we will also be offering a monthly lucky-draw prize for accommodation at one of our lodges. So if you haven’t already, go ahead and donate!

What We Stand For And Who We Partner With

Thornybush Community Projects, is a registered non-profit organisation based in the Thornybush Nature Reserve, one of the original nature reserves in the Greater Kruger National Park. We have been involved with Nourish Eco Village as a partner organisation since early 2019.

Nourish is a non-profit organisation registered with the Department of Social Development here in South Africa, and is situated in a community boarding the Thornybush Nature Reserve. Nourish was created to be a platform linking conservation needs, issues and ideals with community issues and ideals.

The Thornybush Community Project’s philosophy is ‘Unity is Strength’, in these uncertain times, we hold these values close. Please assist us in reaching our goal, to put food in the tummies of those struggling most!

To each and every person who has donated, shared the fundraiser link or sent messages of support, you are greatly appreciated. We have 350 registered beneficiaries, but when their families are included too, we are reaching just under 2000 people per month. What an accomplishment and a difference you are helping us to make.

We had the most wonderful trip in late August to Thornybush Game Lodge once Local travel restrictions had been lifted. The game viewing & birding was phenomenal & the service & food was exceptional, we highly recommend visiting Thornybush especially given that they are offering such exceptional rates currently
