An African Safari with a Side of Gin at Thornybush

When you’re in the midst of a South African safari with Thornybush, it’s easy to forget about the outside world. You’re instantly whisked back to simpler times. Times when Africa’s wildlife roamed unfettered through the bush and every sunset was celebrated with a little something to see the night in.

The Rise of the G&T

South Africa has always had a strong gin culture, which dates way back to the country’s association with British colonial culture and the Great White hunters of yore. No self-respecting Briton was going to venture to foreign lands without a supply of their favourite tipple. But there’s another reason for gin’s lingering popularity on the continent.

Even in those early days, quinine was well-known as an antidote to malaria. As such, British troops in sub-tropical Africa were prescribed a daily dose of tonic water containing this bitter liquid as a defence against this affliction. On its own, tonic water was nothing to write home about, so a shot of gin was added to the mix to make it more palatable.

This combination, universally known as the G&T, also happens to be one of the most refreshing drinks you can have on a hot summer’s day. Soon it became the go-to drink for colonists all over India and Africa.

G&Ts Today

Today, South Africa remains one of the top ten gin-drinking nations on Earth and there is no shortage of gin bars all over the country. Here, you’ll find a wide range of delicious, locally produced gins alongside all the old favourites. Expect flavours of fynbos, citrus, cardamom, blood orange and more!

You can take your G&T as and when you like it, but there’s no doubt that it’s best enjoyed overlooking unspoiled safari destinations, against a backdrop of a blazing sunset. And so, it is, when you’re on safari with Thornybush.

Our evening sunset drives are complimented by the scintillating flavours of gin in all its best forms. Whether you choose one of our locally produced versions, stick with the traditional or bust out with a pink gin to match the sunset, there’s no better way to end a day of exhilarating safari experiences.

Alternatively, guests at our brand new Saseka Tented Camp can settle in at the gin bar and enjoy their evening thirst-quencher overlooking the riverbed or venture down to its sandy shores for a sundowner with a difference.
