Front of House & Relief Reception

In a Nutshell

As our Front of House & Relief Reception, you will be responsible for working with the Lodge Managers and the Front of House team to ensure a world class guest experience.

What you will be doing

Guest check-ins and check-outs
Guest orientation
Room checks
Assisting in the Curio shop
Hosting
Performing reception and administrative duties
Daily and month-end finance related duties
Assisting with deliveries, invoicing and stocktaking
Providing timeous support and communicating with other departments
Ad hoc duties as required

Requirements

Minimum 3 – 5 years’ experience in Front of House (or a similar guest facing role)
Experience in a high-end luxury safari lodge (5* lodge experience is preferred)
Grade 12 | Matric (completed)
Relevant hospitality qualification (advantageous)
Proficient in the English language
Driver’s license
Clear criminal record

Position Details

Contract type: Permanent
Site: Thornybush Game Lodge
Work cycle: 6 weeks on : 2 weeks off
Remuneration: Cash + Provident Fund + Medical Aid
We provide: Accommodation, Meals (while on duty) and Uniform

Habitat Restoration by Thornybush Nature Reserve 🌳🐾

A look at how we are protecting our vulnerable trees with Mesh Wrapping: In collaboration with ecologists, we have prioritised the protection of our most vulnerable trees on the reserve, specifically the large Marulas and Knob thorns. To achieve this, we are implementing a method known as ‘mesh wrapping’ along with dung pasting. This involves painting a mixture of manure onto the trees before wrapping them in chicken wire.

Dung pasting, typically used for tree healing, has also been observed to deter elephants from damaging trees. The wire wrap serves to prevent bark stripping, although it does not prevent elephants from feeding on the tree or toppling it over. It’s crucial to place the wire wrap strategically to protect against bark stripping or ring-barking without causing harm to the tree.

By employing mesh wrapping and dung pasting, we aim to safeguard our reserve’s trees and contribute to the conservation of our ecosystem.

African Wild dog vs Spotted Hyena || do you know the difference? 🐾

While these two animals may look somewhat similar, they are drastically different with divergent evolutionary histories.

Both animals share similar habitat preferences, but while African wild dogs are known for their endurance and can run for long distances to wear down their prey. In contrast, hyenas are more opportunistic hunters and scavengers. They have a reputation for being fierce and aggressive and will often steal food from other predators.

But their most important difference is their evolution.

Where African wild dogs are exactly that – dogs, as they are closely related to wolves and other canines. Hyenas are not canines at all and are more closely related to the mongoose. Hyenas make up their own family which applies to any member of the hyena specie called Hyaenidae.

Baby hyenas are called cubs, whereas a baby wild dog is a pup.

So when you next see one of these fascinating animals one our reserve, you’re now able to understand the difference!

Have you noticed why we always have friendly Nyala

Have you noticed why we always have friendly Nyala’s in camp? As much as we would love to say they’re our camp mascots, there are more scientific reasons (and one cultural theory) as to why they are predominantly the only antelope often found in safari camps.

Firstly, Nyala and Bushbuck find it beneficial to their wellbeing - there is less predator activity and thanks to our groundskeepers and their green fingers and regular watering: better food resources. 🌿 Especially in the winter months.

Secondly Nyala and Bushbuck are thick bush antelope so they are more comfortable in a close quarter system. Impala prefer access to open spaces and although Kudu are also thick bush antelope they get nervous when confined as they are larger and easier targets (less able to nimbly escape predators) 🐆

It is also said that in some African cultures, it is believed that Nyala are comfortable in the camps because they used to be humans in a past life… 🦌🏃🏽‍♂️
